This year, the City of Pittston and Pittston Redevelopment Authority hosted a coloring contest for their 2024 Fair Housing activity. Children ages 5-11 were encouraged to enter their most creative coloring pages highlighting Tomato Tom, the fair housing fox! Over 20 colorful submissions were received, and Liam, age 9 and Josiah, age 6, took home cash prizes for most traditional and most creative.
Fair housing refers to free and equal access to residential housing, and it is important to share positive programs like this within the community to stress the importance of the Federal Fair Housing Act.
The Federal Fair Housing Act was signed into law April 11, 1968. The act states that it is illegal to discriminate in housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, family status and disability. In addition to the Federal Fair Housing Act, he Pennsylvania Human Relations Act, as amended (PHRA) protects against unlawful discrimination of individuals or groups on the basis of race, color, sex, familiar status, religious creed, ancestry, age, national origin, handicap or disability, use of guide support animal because of blindness, deafness or physical handicap of the user or because the user is a handler or trainer of support or guide animals ((43 P.
